Nimal came into our unit last Thursday with severe malnutrition, normally we would need to keep him in the unit for 3 to 4 weeks.

He was discharged home on Monday with a weeks supply of eezee paste. Every week we will monitor his weight. normal recovery time is 5 to 6 weeks. One days supply of this food will cost 30 cents. We are one of the first charities in India to be using this. This will change every thing.

Meet this wonder food for malnutrition called eezee paste, It is a peanut, milk powder and sugar – ready to eat food. It has been the standard treatment for malnutrition in Africa for over 10 years. The Indian goverment are only now allowing for its use.

This is Ag, he is 11 months old and weighs 5 1/2 lbs and is severely malnourished. We have started nutritional supplements and oral medicines. We have performed a chest x-ray, blood tests and urines tests but the family do not acknowledge that Ag is unwell. They think he is normal and give him milk and fruit. We are trying to get the family to agree to admit him for 4 or 5 days.

This is Babu, his family are from Bihar Chand. They went to a hospital locally but they were unable to treat him so he was referred to Dr Singh. Dr Singh diagnosed Babu with Meningitis and has been treating him.

This is Sandhya. She is five years old and has been diagnosed with TB and has a high fever and head pain. She has been treated with antibiotics. The mother is very poor so we provide food and milk for the children. Mina takes Sandhya to see her father when her mother is at work.

Baby Maha Laxmi Ag

Baby Maha Laxmi Ag is 7 months old. He weighs 9 pounds and has breathing problems and diarrhea. The family took the baby to a doctor but there was no improvement so they brought the baby in to see Dr Singh. Dr Singh administered oxygen and has tried to stabilise the baby’s blood sugar and given antibiotics and Baby Maha Laxmi Ag has improved.

This is Annnf. she has been admitted to the malnutrition unit along with her sister and brother. She is 3 and a half years old and weighs only 13 pounds. This photo was taken on 5th May and shows her first steps. For me it is always a beautiful moment when a child begains to walk. My expression in this picture will be her joy in a week or so when she gets stronger

Anaska was found in a camp with severe malnutrition caused most likely from her cleft pallet. She has been admitted to our nutrition department and will undergo surgery in 2 weeks. She is 3 mounths old and weighs just 6 pounds

Imran we found week ago in one our health camps when the family came in this Sunday. He weighs just 8 pounds and is 2 years of age. He still has not taken his first steps. Next week we will begin physio as he becomes stronger.

Mono came into our hospital very sick suffering from vomiting and loose motions for 5 days. He was very weak. The cost of his treatment for a 1 week stay in our hospital, including medicine was 25 euro.

Sahal is 12 years old and he came to our mobile camp. He has a tumor on his shoulder, but due to poverty his family were not able to get it operated on. We have taken a biopsy and when we have the results in a few days, we plan to operate.

Bano, is 2 years old and weighs 11 pounds in this image. When she came into us she was almost on her last breaths just 10 minutes later and her life would have been no more. Oxygen was started and intravenous fluids. Very careful care and feeding is making her well.She is simply and perfectly a child.

Afjay is 3 years old and 12 pounds in weight. Can you imagine that? He weighs less than 6kg. Afjay is a very rare case, normally a child with such severe malnutrition will not survive longer than 2 years of age. Slowly he is improving and gaining pounds. He will have to stay with us for 1 to 2 months.

Little Tinku. We found him, or he found us, who can say, at our mobile clinic in a critical condition. He was rushed to our hospital where he was put on oxygen and received a blood transfusion. He is 1 year old and weighs just 12 pounds. His little body was saying “no more” and giving up. We said “more”. One more day and it would have been too late. He was granted this day and so life. He has made a full recovery. Well done us.

Kumar is 10 years old. He came into us very weak and sick, with a high fever. We diagnosed meningitis which is an infection in the lining of the brain. the condition is life threatening. treatment started immediately and he is now recovering well.

Sometimes it happens that we alone are the voice for children. Due to lack of education and superstition the parents of this brother and sister feel that it is bad karma from a past life that they both were born with hernias and so do not want to go for a operation. If they do not get the operation in time they will die. We will continue to speak with the family. Life dear life is so precious. We will not give up on you two.

He is walking now, but when Subam was admitted he was very very week from severe dehydration due to suffering diarrhea for 2 weeks. He stayed in the hospital for 6 days. The cost of his treatment was about 20 Euro

Shiva is 3 years old and 13 pounds in weight, he has sever malnutrition. Shiva is a rare case as normally with sever malnutrion they die before their 3rd birthday. All children respond to malnutrition in a different way and his response is obviously, “make me well it is not my time yet”, well little Shiva you have come to the perfect place. we are glad that you waited for us to find you.

Babo is 1 year old and sufering from pneumonia. His mother brought him to the mobile clinic where we found he was very sick and he was brought straight to the hospital where I.V. antibiotics have been started. He is recovering well now and will be discharged in a few days

Nikal is 2 years old and weighs 12 pounds. he is suffering from malnutrition, but not considered severe. He is also sick with a high fever. Children cope differently with malnutrition. When a malnourished child starts to become sick it is considered very serious as their immune system is very low and they can die very fast. Fortunately, we have found him in time and he is responding very well to treatment.

Every so often we get a case like this. Varat is three and a half years old and weighs 11 pounds – as unbelievable as that sounds. Due to his severe malnutrition he has suffered some brain damage and kidney damage. His long term prognosis is very poor. He has been admited now for one week and is responding slowly to treatment. He is comfortable. Life is life – so why do we allow this to happen in our world?

Meet Sarisswati, full of life and yet 7 months old and less than 6 pounds weight. Her mother brought her to our hospital after seeing a poster we had put up in a street as part of our ongoing health promotion campaign. She will need to stay for at least two weeks in the unit, where along with food, we will teach her mother about nutrition, managing of household budgets, birth control etc.

His mother had no breast milk and they were unable to afford powdered milk, so they were giving him solid food. He has had diarrhoea for at least 3 months. He is now doing very well

This child’s name is Periyan. He is 3 years old and was admitted on Monday morning suffering from severe diahorea for 5 days. He was very sick and was beginning to have some breathing problems due to the dehydration. Cost of treatment will be around 30 euro for 5 days in our hospital, this includes some health clases for the mother, medicine and food.

Yesterday, the 28th of Feb, we had to refuse to admit a critically ill woman, simply because we had no money ourselves for the treatment. This is the unfortunate reality that we are dealing with. What we do is directly related to how much we are given. We currently owe €7000 for medicine. We have come to an agreement with our medicine suppliers that our credit facility has been removed, but they will give us medicine for cash. Your money will buy their medicine for our children, who come to us asking for nothing more than a little bit of fairness. Can you spare €5? If 80 people could have spared €5 we could have saved this ladys life. If 5000 of you could spare €5 our whole project would be funded for a year.

This childs name is Sawan he is 2 years old and weighs less than 12 pounds in weight. His condition is critical as he is suffering from severe infections. He is unable to feed and reqires intensive care. He is fighting a brave battle and hign antibiotics have been started but there is no improvment yet.
